On March 28, 2025, Mayor Andre Dickens joined community leaders and members of the refugee community at the Carter Center to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Refugee Act of 1980. The event honored Georgia and Atlanta’s longstanding commitment to welcoming refugees and highlighted the legacy of President Jimmy Carter, whose leadership was pivotal in the enactment of the Refugee Act.

The event featured keynote remarks from Mayor Dickens, along with a panel discussion that brought together refugees who were resettled in Atlanta throughout the past four decades. The panelists shared personal stories of resilience, adaptation, and success, underscoring the profound impact that the Refugee Act has had on individuals, families, and communities in Georgia.

Since the passing of the Act in 1980, Georgia has remained one of the top states for refugee resettlement, welcoming over 3,000 refugees in the last year alone. Many of these individuals have gone on to become vital contributors to their communities, making significant economic, social, and cultural impacts. Through the Refugee Act, Metro Atlanta has become home to tens of thousands of refugees, who continue to build new lives and contribute to the vibrant cultural and economic landscape of the city.

In his remarks, Mayor Dickens reflected on how the Refugee Act enshrines core American values, such as compassion, unity, and human dignity. He emphasized the importance of continuing to support refugee resettlement efforts, which help to ensure that Atlanta remains a city of opportunity and inclusion for all. The Mayor also expressed gratitude to the organizations and advocates who work tirelessly to support the resettlement process.

The event served as a powerful reminder of the impact refugees have had on Atlanta and how their contributions continue to shape the city. The commemoration also underscored the importance of ensuring that refugee resettlement remains a priority, offering hope and opportunity to those fleeing violence, persecution, and war.
